Visual Underground: Theatre Scorpio & Japanese Experimental Cinema of the SixtiesOver the past few years the legacy of the Japanese cinematic and artistic experiments of the 1960s has received renewed international attention in academia in Japan, Europe and North America. Visual Underground: Theatre Scorpio & Japanese Experimental Cinema of the Sixties presents and reflects on a body of rarely screened experimental Japanese films from this decade. Visual Underground is a uniquely conceived event, comprised of three days of film screenings and a one-day academic symposium, both of which are open to the general public. Visual Underground will screen a series of experimental films associated with the legendary Theatre Scorpio (Sasori-za), as well as with Japan’s first art-house distributor and production house, the Art Theatre Guild (ATG). Theatre Scorpio was founded in 1967 and was located beneath the main ATG theatre, Shinjuku Bunka. Theatre Scorpio was a singular art space that functioned as one of the epicenters for underground film culture and avant-garde performance. In celebration of this exciting retrospective on Japanese experimental cinema of the 1960s in Montreal, we are featuring a special video interview with the internationally renowned filmmaker, theorist, and video artist Toshio Matsumoto. Concurrent to Visual Underground, the Cinémathèque québécoise (http://www.cinematheque.qc.ca/) will host a large retrospective of ATG films as part of its special program on Japanese independent cinema, running throughout September 2011. Visual Underground : Théâtre Scorpio & Cinéma expérimental japonais des années soixante présente et se penche sur un ensemble de films expérimentaux japonais rarement projetés de cette décennie. Visual Underground est un événement unique comprenant trois jours de projections cinématographiques et une journée de congrès théorique, qui sont tous ouverts au grand public. Visual Underground fera la projection d'une série de films expérimentaux associés au légendaire Théâtre Scorpio (Sasori-za), et aussi au premier studio de distribution et de production de cinéma d'art et d'essai du Japon, l'Art Theatre Guild (ATG). Le Théâtre Scorpio a été fondé en 1967 et était situé sous le théâtre principal de l'ATG, le Shinjuku Bunka. Le théâtre Scorpio était un espace artistique singulier qui faisait office d'un des épicentres de la culture du cinéma underground et de la performance avant-garde. En célébration de cette excitante rétrospective du cinéma japonais des années soixante à Montréal, nous présenterons une interview vidéo exclusif avec Toshio Matsumoto, un cinéaste, théoricien et artiste visuel de renommée internationale. Simultanément à l'événement Visual Underground, la Cinématèque québécoise (http://www.cinematheque.qc.ca/) présentera une rétrospective des films de l'ATG dans le cadre de son programme spécial sur le cinéma indépendant du Japon, se déroulant en septembre 2011.
